South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is mandated to provide social security services that protect individuals against poverty and vulnerability, in line with the Constitution and legislation. Its work is guided by two key laws:

  • Social Assistance Act, 2004: Establishes the framework for social grants, relief of distress, and oversight through an Inspectorate for Social Security.
  • SASSA Act, 2004: Creates SASSA as a public entity to manage, administer, and pay social assistance efficiently.

SASSA’s core role is to deliver social grants and relief to eligible South Africans, ensuring fair, effective, and accountable social protection.
