EMREP Training Readies Officials for Cross-Border Cases

Officials who manage South Africa's extradition and mutual legal assistance matters completed practical training on the Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance Repository (EMREP) at a two-day workshop in Pretoria on 7 and 8 October 2026.

One Platform for Complex Cases

A cross-border legal request often involves several institutions, documents, decisions and follow-up actions. Keeping this information organised, and making sure the right officials can see each matter, is essential to effective justice.

Led by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with support from the Integrated Justice System (IJS), EMREP is a shared digital case management platform. Authorised users can register requests, access case information, upload supporting documents, record actions and monitor progress in one place. This reduces reliance on separate records, email exchanges and manual tracking, while standardised workflows help officials spot outstanding actions and follow each case through its full lifecycle.

Training for Operational Readiness

The IJS brought together officials from the NPA, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the South African Police Service, the Department of Correctional Services, The Presidency and the Department of Home Affairs. Participants received practical training on the processes they will use in their respective roles.

The training was led by Ms Kulani Magwaza, IJS Test Analyst and Manager, and Adv. Mgiba of the NPA shared insights on how EMREP addresses operational pain points in the criminal justice system.

The workshop forms part of broader interdepartmental efforts to strengthen information sharing and coordination, supporting more efficient and accountable management of international legal matters.
